Situated in the far north of Japan, Asahikawa is blanketed with snow for nearly half of the year. Although the climate is harsh, with days when the temperature falls below minus 20 degrees Celsius, the area is blessed with a wealth of woodland resources. Hokkaido is located at 43 to 45 degrees north latitude, within what is called the global temperate broadleaf forest belt, known around the world for its magnificent broadleaf trees.

The Time & Style Factory is located in Higashikawa, in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. We also source and process our raw materials in-house, We process our own wood from start to finish, from the sourcing of logs, to sawing, seasoning, conversion, joining, sanding, and finishing.

When logs are brought down from the mountains, we check the age of each log and make a record of the area in which each tree grew. Most commercially available pieces of timber are sold in standardized lengths and thicknesses. Processing our own wood gives us the ability to saw logs in the precise dimensions that we require, with minimum waste; an important factor for us and for the environment.

Japan is one of the most forested of the world’s developed countries with 70% of its land area, has inherited furniture-making techniques in various places. Exceptional furniture-making skills have been developed in many regions across Japan. Today, Japan’s leading furniture-making areas are: Hida-Takayama; Shizuoka; Tokushima; Fuchu, Hiroshima; Okawa, Fukuoka; and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, where our factory is located.

>> Time & Style Factory

Many crafts such as ceramics, textiles, buildings, Buddhist altars, and cutlery are inherited all over Japan, making the best use of the characteristics of each region. In the midst of the excellent traditional techniques that have been lost, Japan’s unique craftsmanship, which has the design and functionality of craftsmen’s handcrafts, is about to be reviewed again. We believe that it is also important to make use of traditional techniques to create products that are suitable for modern life and to create an environment where craftsmen can soundly pursue their work.
