Ame - Ceramic Brown - Rice Bowl

This ame glaze bowl was produced by a Mashiko ware potter using a potter’s wheel. Soft Mashiko clay mixed with sand was formed into a thin bowl, and ame glaze with beautiful light and dark hues was applied to the bowl. Mashiko ware was produced under the strong influence of the Mingei movement – Japanese folk art movement in 1920s and 1930s to advocate the beauty of functionality. A variety of thick objects with a soft atmosphere were produced under the Mingei movement, in which simple beauty was found in hand-crafted everyday objects. The Ame collection, which is comprised of everyday basic items, such as rice bowls, teacups and plates, is an evolution of Mashiko ware. They are made to be thinner, lighter and slightly smaller to adjust to modern lifestyles. The pieces have a simplicity following the Mingei movement as well as a thin and modest impression. The light and shadow of the brown glaze give it a profound expression.
