Asayake - Ceramic Brown - Coffee Cup and Saucer

SKU: TSOM01201 W76 D99 H60

A white porcelain coffee cup and saucer set made from Nagasaki Prefecture’s Amakusa stone was one of our classic items for nearly 20 years. We wanted to create a range of products using the same design with different types of clay. We knew that even the same shape would be transformed into an entirely new form by each production area, type of clay and glaze. However, what made the simple and modern design of this coffee cup beautiful was the whiteness of the Amakusa stone used in production and the elegance of the thinly crafted handle. We chose porcelain as the material because porcelain is made from stone and can be fired at high temperatures, which ensures sturdiness. On the other hand, clay is made from earth. It is said that the Mashiko clay is sandy, soft and dry. It is not easy to create delicate things with that kind of clay, and the elegance of the handle was particularly hard to replicate. The result of this experience are this Mashiko ware cup and saucer. Using Mashiko clay to replicate the same shape as the white porcelain products, they were made by hand and coated in ame glaze before firing. Despite being made from clay, this product owes its sturdiness to the glossy cover of the ame glaze typical of Mashiko ware.
