Meant for everyday use, we incorporated the same design to create several sizes of this white porcelain plate. A Hasami ware pottery from Nagasaki Prefecture has crafted this same series of plates for us from 2000 until the present. When we designed this line, we were told that the plate should be raised at the bottom. Instead, we manufactured plates with a flat bottom. This was unheard of at the time. At first, the bottom would twist without becoming smooth and the straight lines of the square plates proved difficult to craft. We made countless moulds. For every new mould, we collaborated with several artisans who were involved in the process. The result was a taboo in those years: a flat-bottomed plate. Nowadays, such plates have become common, but back then they were regarded as something that only a beginner with no knowledge of ceramics would make.

The functionality of this plate lies in its stackability, allowing for them to occupy little space when stored. They are also quite slender and have little weight. In terms of presence, we focused on the unity of table and tableware that occurs when flat, low plates are placed on the surface of a table. With its straight bottom and perpendicular rim, this plate has an extremely simple shape, bringing out the richness of the materials.
